Sujeto + had + participio pasado
| Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| Afirmativa | She had finished. |
| Negativa | She hadn't finished. |
| Pregunta | Had she finished? |
| Respuesta corta | Yes, she had. / No, she hadn't. |
|---|---|---|---|
| be | was/were | been | He had been there before. |
| go | went | gone | She had gone home. |
| see | saw | seen | They had seen it. |
| do | did | done | I had done it already. |
| have | had | had | We had had enough. |
| come | came | come | He had come late. |
| take | took | taken | She had taken the wrong train. |
| give | gave | given | They had given up. |
| know | knew | known | I had known him for years. |
| write | wrote | written | She had written three books. |
| speak | spoke | spoken | He had spoken to her before. |
| eat | ate | eaten | We had eaten before arriving. |
| leave | left | left | The train had left already. |
| meet | met | met | I had never met anyone like her. |
| find | found | found | They had found the solution. |

- When I arrived at the station, the train had already left. (Primero salió el tren; después llegué yo)
- She had studied for weeks before the exam. (Primero estudió; después fue el examen)
- By the time he called, she had made her decision. (Primero tomó la decisión; después él llamó)
Con expresiones como by the time, by Monday, by then, by 2020:
- By the time she was 30, she had lived in five different countries.
- By noon, they had finished everything.
- Had you ever been to Asia before that trip?
- She said she had seen the film.
- He told me he had already eaten.
- They explained that the problem had started weeks before.
- If I had known, I would have told you.
- She would have passed if she had studied more.
- Had I seen him, I would have said hello.
Past Perfect Continuous
| Past Perfect | Past Perfect Continuous | |
|---|---|---|
| Énfasis | Acción completada | Duración / proceso en marcha |
| Estructura | had + participio | had been + -ing |
| Ejemplo | She had worked there for years. | She had been working there for years. |
Cuándo usar el Past Perfect Continuous:
- Para explicar la causa de algo en el pasado: His eyes were red. He had been crying. (había estado llorando)
- Para indicar cuánto tiempo llevaba algo antes de que ocurriera otra cosa: They had been waiting for two hours when the train finally arrived.
- Para describir una actividad interrumpida: I had been reading when the power went out.
Con before/after: past simple puede bastar
- She left before he arrived. ✓ (el orden es claro)
- She had left before he arrived.
- When I got there, they finished the meeting.
- When I got there, they had finished the meeting. → Claro: terminaron antes de que llegara yo.
Already, just, never, yet con Past Perfect
- She had already eaten when we arrived. (ya había comido)
- He had just left when you called. (acababa de salir)
- I had never seen anything like it. (nunca antes había visto)
- By midnight, they hadn't finished yet. (todavía no habían terminado)
Errores frecuentes
- ❌ Yesterday, I had gone to the gym. (sin referencia a otro evento anterior)
- ✓ Yesterday, I went to the gym.
Confundir 'd (had) con 'd (would):
- I'd gone → I had gone (past perfect)
- I'd go → I would go (conditional) La diferencia está en la forma del verbo que sigue: participio → had; infinitivo → would.
Olvidar had en reported speech:
- ❌ She said she saw the film. (posible, pero ambiguo)
- ✓ She said she had seen the film.
- ❌ She had go home before I arrived.
- ✓ She had gone home before I arrived.
